강둑은 높고 가파라지고

강물은 깊고 거세어졌지

줄지은 물고기들이 바라보았지

쟈니가 다가오고, 다가오는 것을

한 발 더 내딛자 , 오, 슬프게도

자니는 곤두박질치고 말았네

놀란 물고기들은 이리저리로

꼬리를 흔들며 도망쳐갔네

쟈니의 얼굴은 물에 박힌 채

빨간 책가방만 둥둥 떠가네

그러자 물고기 하나, 둘, 세 마리가

조르르 다시 돌아왔다네

서둘러 헤엄쳐 온 물고기들은

물에 빠진 쟈니의 꼴을 보았지

물고기들은 강물 위로 고개를 들고

가엾은 쟈니를 비웃었다네

강물 밖으로 고개를 들고

죽어버린 쟈니를 비웃었다네
