만일 그들이 전생의 기억을 오롯이 끌어안고 살아간다면

이해가 되지 않니

그들이 왜 그토록 힘겨운 비명을 지르는지

마치 우리 같잖아

과거를 두고 발광하는 것

 

내 꿈 속에

코끼리들은 드넓은 평원에서

보금자리를 한껏 더럽힌 채 고개를 들고

달아오른 머리를 식혀 줄 

비가 내리기만을 기다리고 있었지

 

그런 내게 그댄 어떻게 편지 따위를 보내는지

이토록 필사적으로 노력하고 있는 나에게...

잊으려 발버둥치는 나를

그댄 다시 오랜 기억 속으로 떠미는데

 

 

호랑이가 자식을 지키듯 삼엄한 경계를 뚫고

그댄 어쩌면 그리도 쉽게 내 안에 들어온 거지

어떻게 나의 보호 본능이 그리도 한 순간에 허물어질 수 있었을까

나도 모르게 깜박 잠든 밤이 있었을까

 

내 꿈 속에

호랑이들은 사냥감을 물고와서

놈의 사지를 갈기갈기 찢어버리고 있었지

그들의 입술은 핏빛으로 물들고

이빨은 심장 깊이 박혀있었어

 

그런 나에게 그댄 어떻게 곧 전화하겠다는 말을 하는지

내게 필요한 건 그대 없는 평화임을 알고 있으면서...

곁에 둘 애완동물이 필요했다면

나보다 온순한 짐승을 택해야 했어, 그대

 

 

나무 위의 매가 굶주린 채 죽은 고기를 찾고 있는데

그댄 산 채로 그 둥지 속에 던져진 거야

비록 얼마간은 그 안에서 동침할 수 있다해도

결국 이 죽음의 무도엔 두 가지 결말만이 존재하지

 

때를 봐서 상처 입은 채로 도망치거나,

그가 당신을 잡아먹는 동안 가만히 누운 채로

스스로의 몸이 조각조각 찢겨져 나가는 걸 바라보며

피투성이가 된 채 웃음을 터뜨리거나

 

 

그러므로 사랑에 빠진 이들이여

부디 망가지지 않도록 조심히 온전히 그 사랑을 간직하시게

그러나 스스로를 그 위험의 한 가운데에 내던지되

잠들 때도 한 쪽 눈을 감지 마시길

Like you and I, they must have some temper.

Watching for some kind of rain to cool their hot heads.

And I am dreaming of them with their kill, tearing it all apart,

Blood dripping from their lips, and teeth sinking in too hearts.

And how dare that you say you will call, when you know I need some peace of mind..

If you had to take sides with the animals, won't you do it with one who is kind?

 

If the hawks in the trees need the dead, if you're living you don't stand a chance.

You can lie there and say you are fed, but there are only two ends to this dance.

You can flee with your wounds just in time, or lie there as he feeds,

Watching yourself ripped to shreds and laughing as you bleed.

 

So for those of you falling in love, keep it kind, keep it good, keep it right.
